Melon Seeds ‘Budgie’

Exciting new Canary Melon ‘Budgie’ grows into a neat bushy plant bearing between 4-6 bright yellow melons with very sweet creamy white flesh. The tasty fruits make delicious summer appetisers or desserts. Melon ‘Budgie’ shows good resistance to powdery and downy mildew, and in the UK is best grown in a greenhouse.
Sow indoors
Level fill a module seed tray with seed compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually on edge 1cm (½ in) deep. Place in a propagator at 20-25°C (70-75°F) or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Grow on
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant into 9cm (3½ in) pots of potting compost. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 15°C (60°F).
Plant out
Plant into the greenhouse border 60cm (12in) apart, grow bags or in 30cm (12in) diameter containers on a sunny, sheltered, frost free patio when first flowers have opened.
Aftercare
Water and feed well to promote fruiting. If male flowers form (those without a swelling behind them). DO NOT remove them as they are necessary for pollination.
