Award-winning leek Lancaster produces a good crop of uniform, upright stems with blue-green leaves. A very frost-hardy variety, it stands well over winter and has good resistance to bolting. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it’s an excellent choice for any winter vegetable garden
Sow indoors
Sow thinly into pre-watered seed trays 1cm deep. Place in warmth, 10-15°C and keep moist at all times.
Plant out
When 20cm tall, plant into holes 15cm deep, then fill with water. Plant 20cm apart, in rows 30cm apart.
Sow outdoors
Sow thinly into pre-watered soil 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart in a seed bed. Keep soil moist at all times. Thin to 20cm apart.
Aftercare
To ensure long white stems, draw up soil around plants as they develop. Keep well watered and feed regularly.
