What are Box Tree Caterpillars?
First identified in 2007, Box Tree Caterpillars (Cydalima perspectalis) are prevalent in the UK, particularly in London and the home counties. They exclusively feed on box plants (Buxus spp.) and can cause significant damage quickly. Look for signs like defoliation, webbing, and frass.
How do Nematodes Help?
Box Tree Killer Nematodes contain Steinernema carpocapsae, which enter caterpillars through openings, causing infection and death. Apply on damp days, preferably in the morning or evening. They are active from April to October; treat as soon as you spot the caterpillars.
Application Instructions:
- Mix 25 million nematodes with 2.5 litres of water.
- Fill a sprayer with 8 litres of the solution, thoroughly coat your box plants, and apply 250-500ml per square metre.
- Repeat after 7 days for best results.
Maintain healthy plants with Westland Buxus Feed & Protect and ensure soil temperatures are above 5ºC (40ºF). Store nematodes in the fridge and apply by the use-by date for maximum effectiveness.
