Dianthus ‘Little Maiden’ is a charming plant for a rock garden or container, producing a neat dome of foliage covered with masses of fragrant, fringed white flowers that float above the foliage on slender stems. This delicate-looking perennial is surprisingly tough and hardy, and provides good ground cover on well-drained soils.
Sow indoors
Sow on the surface of pre-watered seed compost, in pots or trays, lightly pressing into the surface. Place in a propagator or bag at around 20°C and allow 2-4 weeks for germination. Remove lid or bag and keep in cooler conditions after germination.
Grow on
Transplant when seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow on in a sheltered spot outdoors, such as a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
Plant out
Plant out in a full sun in well-drained soil. Also suitable for containers, raised beds or rockeries.
Aftercare
Remove faded flowers during summer to prolong blooming. Remove any dead foliage in spring. Add grit to improve drainage where necessary. Suitable for gravel gardens.
